AdBlue is used in most diesel cars meeting the EURO 6 standard. For trucks it is from EURO 4 standard onwards. The urea is housed in a separate tank in the car and is injected into the SCR catalytic converter via a nozzle located in front of the catalytic converter while the engine is running. Once injected into the exhaust stream, it begins to decompose into ammonia NH3 and carbon dioxide CO2 due to heat and water. The ammonia then reacts on the surface of the catalyst with the NOx produced by the combustion of diesel. As a result of the whole chemical reaction, harmless water vapour and carbon dioxide are emitted from the exhaust instead of dangerous nitrogen oxides.
